All about Iphigeneia at Aulis

CHICAGO – Lights Out Theatre Company launches Iphigeneia at Aulis in Collaboraction’s new performance space in the heart of Wicker Park. Adapted and directed by Josh Altman, Iphigeneia at Aulis opens May 12 at Collaboration located on the third floor of Flat Iron Arts Building, 1579 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. Performances run May 12 through June 3 with Monday and Tuesday performances at 8pm and Thursday and Friday performances at 9pm. General admission tickets are $15. Industry and Student admission is $10 with valid identification.

Follow the bright orange lights of the bustling Milwaukee Avenue up the long staircase, to the third floor of the Flat Iron Arts Building. Grab a drink, stake out a spot (and a pillow) on the floor, and join us for an intimate retelling of Iphigeneia at Aulis with Lights Out Theatre Company. And like all LOTC productions, stick around after the show and hang out with us!

Just before Helen of Troy’s face launched a thousand ships, the goddess Artemis ceased all active winds keeping the ships at bay. In an effort to support his brother’s honor, Agamemon is forced to sacrifice his daughter in order to lift this halt on wind. Iphigeneia at Aulis is Euripides’s final tragic saga of a family’s emotional journey through grief and acceptance. In Josh Atlman’s re-imagining of Iphigeneia at Aulis, this play is intimate and engaging through the elimination of the choral odes. Infusing the play with live original music and a strong sense of ritual, Lights Out Theatre Company brings a fresh approach to a Greek classic.

Director Josh Altman makes his Chicago directorial debut with this production. Josh has worked extensively as an assistant director in Chicago, assisting David Cromer on A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE (Writers’ Theatre) and CHERRYWOOD (Mary-Arrchie Theatre), which Josh went on to direct the extension of. He also assisted Pam MacKinnon on Steppenwolf Theatre’s WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, which travelled to Arena Stage in Washington DC. Additional assistant directing credits include THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING (Court Theatre, dir. Charles Newell), DO THE HUSTLE (Writers’ Theatre, William Brown) and TO MASTER THE ART (TimeLine Theatre, William Brown). He most recently directed the world premiere of Nick Bailey’s THE NARROWS for Red Tape Theatre’s Fresh Eyes Project. Josh is a Teaching Artist with TimeLine Theatre Company and has also worked with Redmoon Theater, Next Theatre, Piven Theatre Workshop and The Inconvenience. Josh is a graduate of Tufts University in Boston.

Iphigeneia at Aulis features: Ben Chang, Anthony DeMarco, Barbara Figgins, Michael Hamilton, Adam Hinkle, Anne Leone, Anna Lucero, Kipp Moorman, and Andrew Nowak. Stage Management by Mary Rose O’Connor, Lighting Design by Nic Jones, Property Design by Christina Dougherty, Dramaturgy by Sarah Sapperstein, and Graphic Design by Kate Bateman.

Lights Out Theatre Company approaches its productions as if they were throwing parties among friends, and holds a passion for sharing its work with people who have not typically been considered traditional theatre audiences. With a special focus on creating an exciting, fun environment, and a tight youthful community, LOTC seeks to harness in the theatre with the same energy and theatricality of a rock concert.

Lights Out Theatre Company is a company of multi-disciplined artists dedicated to serving Chicago audiences with fresh and provocative theatrical productions. United under the common goal to bring new ideas, voices, and audiences into the theatre, LOTC seeks to create works that are relevant, risky, and transcendent of tradition and genre.
